The Atomic Nukes vs. Numb Nuts: 2 Feb 2006 (written by Gerhard) |
The Team: Erik, Stefan, Sarel, Michael, Gerhard, Dirk, Philip, Heinrich |
Our last game before the semi-finals saw The Atomic Nukes winning the toss and electing to bat first. Erik and Stefan got us of to a good start posting 32 runs for the first skin, 16 runs a piece. This ended up to be the only decent skin for the innings, as only one of the remaining three skins managed to move into double figures. Catches flew all over the place and gaps were nowhere to be found. Dirk managed to score a brave 19 as we scraped the runs together for which did not seem to be a competitive score. We only succeeded to post our opponents a target of 57 for victory. With not to many runs on the board we knew we had to pull something extraordinary out of the hat. Some tight bowling from Philip (1/5) and Wimpie (2/-1) secured us the first skin, but with 29 on the board, half of the required runs were already ticked off. The second skin was well contested as Konrad (2/-1) and Erik (1/1) put some pressure on the batsmen. They never the less manage to score 17 runs, which was enough to win the skin. In the third skin we threw everything we had at the Numbies to try and pull off an almost impossible win. Heinrich started the onslaught with 3/-7 in the first over and Konrad finished it off with 3/-6. The skin ended on –2 and we bagged another skin. In the final skin Dirk, Erik and Gerhard did their best to restrict the Numbies to below the required score. They sneaked past our score in the second last over and then just threw all defenses at the last six deliveries. They ended up on 60, leaving the Atomics defeated by 4 runs. Best bowling was from Konrad with 5/-7 and highest score with the bat came from Dirk with 19. Contributor of the Match was Dirk with a net contribution of 12 runs. |

Knowing what happened previously when we played these okes, we were keen to do well this time! We went in to bat first, as usual when we win the toss (quite difficult, considering our oppponents's talents...). Stefan and I got off to a reasonable start in the first skin, scoring 25. Sarel and Michael continued, but find the going a little tougher in the second skin and managed 19 runs. Sarel did prove that he could reach even the highest bouncer! Then came Gerhard and Dirk. Clearly, Dirk got over the rustiness of not playing for a while: he scored 29 big ones and together with Gerhard pushed our total to 90 runs at the end of the third skin. The wet team came in last and scored their usual 21 runs to give the Porny's 111 to chase. They started off well, scoring 28 in the first skin, just taking the skin as well. Sarel took a screamer of a one handed catch clubbed straight back at him while he was bowling. I was almost ready to catch his hand and the ball at the back. They won the second skin as well, scoring 21 runs. At this stage the game was quite evenly poised. In came their big gun (the Angry Guy, as some refer to him...). They managed 34, which short of our third skin's total. Their skin came in requiring 29 runs for victory. The first two overs went our way, conceding only 9 runs. Then came the fateful third over bowled by yours truly... It went for plenty (two sixes broke our back a bit...) So they had 111 with one over to spare. They got a single off the first ball, gave us hope when they gave away a catch the next ball. When they got to 112 again, they just blocked the last two balls and walked away with a one run victory. But it was more like I gave the game away in one over, rather than them beating us. Contributor of the match was Gerhard, again! Fourth time in a row now! Contributed 17 with the bat and bowled 3 / 2, net 15. |
The Nukes Kywalkers vs. Team Amstel: 24 Jan 2006 (written by Robowich) |
The Team: Erik, Stefan, Rob, Turbo, Visagie, Heinrich, Gerhard, Konrad |
We lost the toss and the captain of the Amstel team decided to bat first. That suited us well because we were confident that we had a good team for a chasing game. Due to illness and absences for work and holiday we missed some of our key players, but with our heavy loss against the same team two weeks ago in mind, our replacements were not the weakest players in our pool of Nukes to put it mildly.Gerhard, Erik and Heinrich joined Stefan, both Johans (Turbo and Visagie), Konrad and Rob to make a team that should be able to put up a good fight. The Amstel drinkers came in and managed to score 37 in the first skin. We definitely needed some wickets, of which we succeeded to take only two in the second skin. They added 41 bringing the total to 78. But then our bowlers and fielding kicked in and Turbo, Erik, Stefan and Gerhard restricted the third skin to a mere 8, helped by Gerhard getting his hattrick of hattricks in the last over, getting 4 wickets for -8 runs. The final Amstel skin managed to add another 32, getting their total to 118, a total that we were confident was within our grasp. We sent our hard hitters in for the first skin, trying to upset the Amstel fielding. Erik and Stefan duly hit their way to a formidable 49 runs, taking the skin easily. Rob and Turbo stepped onto the field confident that the good form of late would continue. Well, that wouldn't be the case and loosing 8 wickets in the first 15 balls broke their confidence well and truly. In the end the skin ended on a total score of 42. Not what we expected. Heinrich and Visagie came on and managed a well earned 21, leaving a required score of 55 for Gerhard and Konrad. These two played their heart out. No big hitting at all, just two fours and for the rest solid two's and singles, accompanied by an incredible rate of stolen runs. The brothers only needed half a wink to know what the other was doing and they had the Amstel fielders exactly where they wanted them: completely clueless of who was running where and where to try to hit the stumps. True delight to watch! They added another 44 runs to the score, enough to take the third skin of the night but sadly not the game. Evenso, we did have enough material to discuss during the after-match meeting, one of them what this Amstel team is actually doing in our league. They are a strong brew and must be the favourites to take the league's honours. Contributor of the Match goes to Gerhard with his hat trick of hat tricks, 4 for zero and 24 runs scored. |

We went in to bat first with Turbo and Rob getting a healthy 27 from the first skin, this made us confident of reaching a solid total, but with excellent bowling they restricted our second skin to 7, this brought on the pressure but Johan and Carel added a steady 22. Our hopes were on Konrad and Heinrich, which looked good, but could not get some big ones away, they made up for it with some cunning run stealing. In the end our total on the board said 79. We knew that we had to pull out all the stops in the field and went in with inspiration, things were looking good when we restricted their first skin to 22. This boosted our confidence, and after the second skin we where sure that the match was still winable, our fielding was also looking very good. Unfortunately Team Amstel thought otherwise and followed up with a 3rd skin of 46 and final skin of 50 ! Martin had a good game behind the wickets, which included a stumping. Once again our experience with Umpire Reinhard has been dismal, the scorecard was a full of errors and some of the decisions were criminal. Contributor of the Match was Konrad with 3 net runs. |
The Atomic Nukes vs. Vasvat: 10 Jan 2006 (written by Philip le Roux) |
The Team: Erik, Stefan, Wimpie, Sarel, Gerhard, Michael, Philip, Heinrich |
First game of the season and every body expected to be rusty. The Nukes met up with old rivals from a couple of seasons ago, “Vas Vat”. Surprisingly the holiday did every body well, with the Nukes looking quite sharp in general. Batting first Sarel and Wim started steady with 18 runs, with Erik and Stefan smacking 41 for the next skin. The old comraderie of Michael and Gerhard deliver 31 and for the first time Philip and Heinrich also made a considerable contribution for the final skin, scoring 31. 121 the total to chase. The Vas Vat boys started with a bang, slapping 37 for skin 1. Slowly but surely the Nukes started to perform with the second skin limited to 28. From here on in the Nukes suddenly shifted gears, with the fielding picking up and some very sharp fielding. 21 runs for the 3 rd skin was the last glimmer of hope for the opponents. Gerhard's first 3 balls broke the back of the opponents – HATTRICK time!!! (Philip taking two sharp stumpings….) and ending with figures of 5/-8. Thanx cappy, only 8 for the final skin. A good start to the season, winning by 27 runs. Special thanks to Stefan and Michael for helping out. Best wishes to Steve in hospital, hope to see you back in action soon!!!! |

The Atomic Nukes vs. Booze Boys: 6 Dec 2005 (written by Gerhard vd Merwe) |

We won the toss and decided to bat first. For once, our big cannons, Erik and Steve misfired and only managed to put up 4 runs for the first skin. Wimpie and Dugald managed to stabilize the boat somewhat and added 23 runs for the second skin. With 27 on the board halfway through the innings, we knew that a defendable total will the hard to come by. Gerhard and Michael then managed to give some hope as they knocked a useful 32 for the third skin, Gerhard top scoring with 22 runs and the total on 59. Philip and Heinrich did their usual steady stuff and lost only two wickets in a sea of singles to add another 16 runs to end the innings on 75. With not too many runs on the board to defend, we knew that it would take an extraordinary performance to keep the boozed ones off their feet. Steve started off with a tight over (1/0) to let our opponents know we meant business. Dugald and Heinrich ended of the skin with two devastating overs, 2/6 and 3/-7, to leave the Boozies on only 8 runs. In the process Heinrich achieved his 10th career hat trick. Erik started it all with a run-out at the back, followed by a lightning fast stumping by Gerhard as the batsman sidestepped the ball. Michael then rounded it off with a back breaking catch in midfield. In the second skin Michael, Dugald, Philip and Wimpie did their best to keep us in the run. The skin added 26 runs and the total were standing on 34 after Philip inflicted the most damage with 2/3 in his over. In the third skin we gently started to strangle our opponents with some tight bowling and excellent fielding. Steve, Philip, Heinrich and Erik ensured that for the first time in the match we got our noses in front at comparative stages. The skin added 20 runs and the total on 54. 21 runs were required from the last four overs and that called for some deep digging in the character mines. We dug, but instead of producing only a show of character, we dished up a few super-human performances. Halfway through the first over from Wimpie, Michael collected a low flying rocket that made the batsmen realize that 21 runs will be hard to come by. As if the message was not clear enough, Erik made everybody rub their eyes in disbelief as he turned into a human rocket to intercept the one launched from the bat. Everybody waited for the ball to slam into the back net, but instead it was safely in the hand of Spiderman as he put out the remaining flames. Wimpie's 3/-3 inflicted the early blow we required. Gerhard then rattled the batsman's furniture with an in-swinging yorker that ripped through all defenses. Erik and Gerhard then kept the batsmen under control the last two overs to ensure that our noses stay in front. With one ball to go the Booze Boys needed 6 runs for victory, but Gerhard was not going to have any of that. They only managed to score 2 of the last delivery to end up on 72, three runs short. This game was without a doubt won by commitment from all 8 players and a fielding performance that will be spoken of for a long time to come. As the tip of the week says: Catches win matches… end of story! Contributor of the match was shared between Fielding and Heinrich with a net run contribution of 14 (5 runs and 5/-9). |

The Atomic Nukes vs. Pornstars: 29 Nov 2005 (written by Steve Aaron) |
The Team: Erik, Steve, Wimpie, Sarel, Gerhard, Dirk, Heinrich, Stefan |
This week's game was perhaps our toughest competition yet. We batted first and struggled to a debased 58 with only Erik scoring above 10 with a well endowed 24 thanks to a few good four plays. The Porn Stars didn't miss a trick and caught everything that came their way. They displayed a magnificent specimen of bowling and an amazing ability for swinging. Determined not to lie down and accept defeat, we spiced things up with a switch in the bowling which proved fairly average for the first skin. Then things came right and we managed to keep them in bondage for the next 8 overs, picking up both skins, only conceding 10 and 11 runs respectively. Heinrich offered another brilliant over with 2/-6 while there was some great fielding all round especially 2 great catches from Erik at the back left. Unfortunately the last skin would not go down the same way. They played more conservatively and reached the total without too much trouble and then opened up to climax with a double taking the score from 51 to 102. A big loss but one in which we proved our abilities to defend in the field. Contributer of the match was Erik with a net 12. |
The Nukes Kywalkers vs. Mufassa's Pride: 29 Nov 2005 (written by Johan Visagie) |
The Team: Carel, Bastijn, Rob, Visagie, Warren, Ryan, Steve, Stefan |
We faced our old enemies, Mufassas Pride on 29 November 2005 and was looking forward to breaking their winning streak against us. We batted first and started off slowly on the first skin, whereafter the second and third skins batted steadily and put up a solid 74. Steve and Stefan walked in and was looking to put up a decent total to defend, they did well with Steve getting an excellent 28. This brought our score total to 109 runs. Going out to field we were confident in defending our total. Their first skin went too well for our liking and danger signals started showing, we contained the second skin to only 19 runs. The third skin cut loose and decimated our bowling, with the fielding not up to par either, they passed our score with this skin ! The final skin went pretty bad too and they ended up with 142 total. The umpire had nothing to do with out defeat , but overall made a hash of most decisions and the score card was a comedy of errors. The defeat was difficult to grasp, but in the end our fielding was the one to blame. Contributor of the Match goes to Warren with 12 net runs (18 & 3 / 6 runs). |

The Atomic Nukes vs. Booze Boys: 22 Nov 2005 (written by Sarel Coetzee) |
The Team: Erik, Steve, Wimpie, Sarel, Gerhard, Dirk, Philip, Heinrich |
The Atomic Nukes had to stay sober against the Booze Boys. Cappy won the toss and elected to set a target. Erik and Steve opened the batting with a good 28 runs from the first skin. The scoreboard kept on ticking over with Gerhard and Dirk adding 32 and Heinrich and Philip adding 24. This all added up to a fairly good total of 97 runs. Knowing that the score won't be easy to defend, the Atomics knew they had to keep it tidy in the field and this is exactly what they did. After winning the first three skins and leaving the Booze Boys with 38 runs to win the game, they could be forgiven if they thought that the game was in the bag. With 3 balls to go the Booze Boys needed 2 runs to clinch the game and all seemed lost. Some tidy bowling and fielding led to the taking of two wickets (two catches by Sarel right in front! [web]) leaving the Booze Boys swaying on 94 runs at the end of the game! Contributor of the match goes to Heinrich, scoring 17 runs with the bat and bowling figures of 5/-1, with a net run contribution of 18. |
The Atomic Nukes vs. Vars Melk: 16 Nov 2005 (written by Philip le Roux) |
The Team: Erik, Steve, Wimpie, Sarel, Gerhard, Dirk, Philip, Heinrich |
3/3 for the season so far….. All very convincing. Our good run of the season just continues which must be highlighted by the sharp fielding!! Is seems that the Nukes machines is running extremely well oiled this season. Batting first Erik and Steve once again provided an exceptional platform for the evening, 54 for the first skin! The new batting format of hitting hard 1 st skin (54), consolidating 2 nd skin (24 – Wim and Sarel), hitting hard 3 rd skin (35 with Gerhard and Dirk in their new positions) and consolidating the 4 th skin (21 – Philip and Heinrich) also sets a positive trend for the new season. 134 for the evenings work. Only six extras bowled with exceptional fielding always kept the pressure on the Melk ouens. Their Vars melk soon became spoilt with the first skin only delivering 20. Besides the second skin reaching 40, the next two skins were controlled again largely by the Nukes, delivering 14 and 26. Steve trying to swing the ball completely confused the batsmen with his straight deliveries and ended with 4/-1! Also well deserved the contributor of the game with 25 runs. May the rest of the season go ahead with the current momentum! UP AND ATOM! |
The Nukes Kywalkers vs. Team Amstel: 15 Nov 2005 (written by Martin Sage) |
The Team: Ryan, Martin, Carel, Visagie, Rob, Turbo, Stefan, Steve |
The Nukes Kywalkers played against Team Amstel. Nukes, thirsty to squeeze the Amstel out of their opponents were sent in to bat first with Martin and Ryan stepping onto the pitch. A slow start-up with zero runs scored in the first over. Next three overs were a lot more fired up with a solid 40 runs for the partnership. Carel and Visagie swooped in to bat, struggling somewhat, contributing a lean 15. Rob and Turbo beamed onto the pitch, but had a little trouble with high ROT as wickets tumbled: 4 bowled, 2 caught and 2 run-outs... -3 for the partnership. Hard luck mixed with quick and accurate bowling. Steve and Stefan slid onto the court with high hopes and a lot of fire. Good slogging but caught four times, offerring another decent 39 to the score, ending on 91 - a tough one to defend.
Amstel brewed up an average 22 in their first skin, a nice over from Martin bowling 3/-4. Next skin was thirsty for runs and bubbled through with a heavy 46. A sour third skin came pouring in with another 47, Nukes spirits diluting out. Fourth skin was much better from the Nukes side, only allowing 27 runs through - some tight bowling there from Carel 1/4 and Rob 2/1. Final score 142, Nukes losing by 51 runs. Man of the match was Martin netting +15. |

The Nukes Kywalkers vs. Wing Nuts: 1 Nov 2005 (written by Turbo) |
The Team: Ryna, Martin, Turbo, Rob, Schalk, Johan V, Steve, Carel |
When playing against the Wingnuts they won the toss and elected to field first. We started out with a good skin of 29 by Ryan and Martin, followed by a very good skin of 39 by Schalk and Johan – with Schalk hitting 25. This trend was continued with Rob and Turbo making 37, thus ending the 3 rd skin on 105 and the nail was driven home with a fantastic skin of 54, courtesy of Steve and Carel. Steve contributing a massive 40! On fielding they managed to keep up with the batting average winning the 1 st skin with 2 runs and losing the 2 nd skin with 5 runs – still only 3 runs behind (to the great delight of their fan club on the balcony). From here though, they started to lose their confidence after fantastic fielding from the back court, most noticeably from Steve managed to take 2 wickets which would have been sevens! This broke their confidence and they only managed 22 in the third skin bringing them up to 87. In the last over though they tried hitting big ones and managed to get to 100 in the second over of the the last skin, after which we immediately got a wicket and from there they could just hover beneath 100 losing a wicket every time they think they can get to a 100. They ended on 98 against our 159 after a great effort from the Nukes giving us a resounding victory! Man of the Match goes to Steve with a huge net contribution of 34. |
The Atomic Nukes vs. The Replacements: 1 Nov 2005 (written by Gerhard vd Merwe) |
The Team: Steve, Erik, Wimpie, Carel, Johannes, Philip, Gerhard, Dirk |
After mutual agreement between the captains, The Atomic Nukes was to set the target for the opponents. Our pinch hitting opening pair of Erik and Steve made full use of the mediocre bowling attack and smashed 51 runs off the first skin to get the momentum going. Philip and Carel followed with a useful 37 after some particular inaccurate bowling from our opponents. Wimpie and Johannes then piled on a steady 20 runs for the third skin to push the total past the 100 mark. Gerhard and Dirk managed to add another 23 runs in the last skin from some more accurate bowling. Losing only 10 wickets and some good hitting up front ensured that we could set the Replacements a difficult target of 132 for victory. Despite having a decent score on the board to defend, The Atomic Nukes was determined to keep matters tight from the start. Johannes unsettled the batsmen with some quick deliveries in the first over, followed by a successful Steve over (2/8). Wimpie ended the skin with a strangling 1/3, leaving the skin on 27. Not too many wickets in the second skin, but tight bowling from Steve, Philip, Carel and Erik only allowed 29 runs and secured us another skin. To clinch the third skin, we had to keep it below 20. This called for some tight bowling. Johannes, Philip, Erik and Dirk stood up to the challenge and only conceded 14 runs for the skin, with Erik 2/-1 and Dirk 2/1 strangling the batsmen beyond the point of no return in the last two overs. Wimpie, Dirk and Gerhard kept the last skin to only 20 runs, securing victory and all four skins…full marks for a job well done! Steve top scored with the bat (31 runs) and Erik recorded the best bowling figures (2/4). Man of the Match goes to Steve with a net run contribution of 19 (31 runs and 3/12). |
