3 August 2006: |
On Sunday 31-07-2006 The Explosive Nukes got their shot at a gold medal against The Vodashop Reds. We batted first and started solidly with 28 in the first skin from Turbo and Visagie. Then Piet and Frank added another 15 runs for the second skin. Nandu and Steve attacked the bowling as usual but came off somewhat second best with only 24 in the third. Gerhard and Konrad took the bowling apart in the last skin, not losing a wicket, they hit a masssssive 59 run skin! That pushed the target up to a hefty 126 runs. The Reds (in the face!) started their run chase solidly with a 36 run first skin. Then everything started to click for us in the field.! We restricted their second skin to a mere 5 runs, with the third skin only able to add another 15. That left the last skin with the unlikely job of scoring 71 runs in the final skin for victory and the gold. They could only muster 21 runs in the last skin, giving us an emphatic 49 run victory and most important of all, The Gold Medal! Well done guys, you made us proud! Contributor of the Match was Gerhard with 23 net runs. He also took 4 stumpings! So that is it for the Winter 2006 season. But wait for it, yes, the new season starts next week! Keep watching this space for all the latest info, stats and joys of NUKES Action Cricket! |

On 25-07-2006, The Explosive Nukes got a second chance to reach the Gold Medal Final against Wackers. We batted first and reached a sizeable total of 127 runs. All the skins chipped in with some runs for a change! Confident that we could defend that total, we got our turn to bowl. The Wackjobs started off well, matching our huge first skin, but from then on we reeled them in! In the end they could only manage 106 runs, handing victory and already at least a silver medal on Sunday! Contributor of the Match was Konrad vd Merwe with a huge net contribution of 27, which included career best bowling figures of 5 / -9! The Atomic Nukes then played MOB to restore some semblance of pride to their dismal season. The MOBsters batted first and reached a total of 112 runs. We bowled and fielded all right, but conceeded to many extras and did not take all the chances we got for wickets. Our turn to bat started solidly as we matched them at the half way stage. They tightened the screws in the third skin and Ryan pulling a hammy did not help our cause either. In the end, we could only reach 98 runs. Contributor of the Match was Nandu with a hefty net run total of 20. Tip of the Week: Make sure that you know exactly where the wickets are in relation to your fielding position and body orientation. This will make it easier for you to throw the ball to them accurately (within reach of either the back stop or keeper!) |

On 18-07-2006, The Explosive Nukes played their first semi-final game against The Vodashop Reds. The Cellphone freaks batted first and ringtoned their way to a mammoth 163 runs. Wimpie fared best with the ball in hand compiling figures of 2 / 0 runs. Never a team to lie down quietly we took the game to them, batting up a storm in first skin to reach 51. Charl (21) and Nandu (30) doing us proud! After that, they turned on the pressure and we could not keep up, which meant that we reached 99 runs in the end, some runs short of course! Contributor of the Match was Nandu Menon with a 10 run net contribution. Tip of the Week: Everyone bowls differently. Figure out what your strengths and weaknesses are and how YOU can make life as difficult as possible for the batsman. By doing so, you can bowl with a plan when the ball is tossed in your direction. |
13 July 2006: |
On 11-07-2006, The Explosive Nukes played against Wackers. The (weed?) Wackers batted first and were wacked into submission! We restricted their first skin to -9! They could not recover from this position and put only 57 to defend. Confident, we replied with 29 runs in the first skin, followed by 33, 41 and 15 to end comfotable victors on 118 runs. Contributor of the Match was Piet Viljoen with 23 net runs. The Atomic Nukes squared up against Super Stars, again. They started batting and were smashing the ball about from the word go! Their first skin porduced 51 runs, which was followed, sadly, by 43 in the second. Sitting pretty on 94 runs after two skins, their third skin must have thought it would be a walk in the park. We however put together four stunning overs, conceding only 7 in the third skin. Their last skin again smashed the ball everywhere and we had to chase 134 in the end. We started off ok, sitting on 63 after the first two skins, but they bowled and fielded better in the latter half of our innings and we ended on 94 runs. Contributor of the Match was Michael Correia with 24 net runs! Later that night, The Atomic Nukes played OB's 2. We started the batting solidly having 74 runs on the board after two skins. We struggled somewhat in the second half of the game, but we ended up on 107 runs, only the second time we reached the magical three figures this season. Our opponents were behind after the second skin, but still within striking distance. Their last skin however won it for them as they scored 42 runs to end up on 126 runs. Contributor of the Match is shared between Erik & Piet with 9 net runs. Congratulations to: Tip of the Week: Make a mental note of where the gaps in the field are when you arrive at the crease. This will help you steer the ball into the gap, thus preserving your wicket and scoring you runs! |
7 July 2006: |
On 27-06-2006 The Explosive Nukes played two games. The first game was against Jou Ma. The Mommies Boys batted first and found their way to 89 runs. Some good bowling from Frank, taking 3/-3. Then our onslaught came. Slowly but surely we kept pace with their score and there was only one run difference at the end of the third skin. They were not prepared for Nandu though! He smashed 34 sweet runs in no time, helping to ensure victory by 14 runs. Contributor of the Match was indeed Nandu Menon with 25 net runs! Afterwards, The Explosives continued their winning ways when they took on Scorpions. It became evident that the Scorpions had no sting whatsoever as we mushroomed our way to a mammoth 163 runs. All the skins contributed big runs: 36, 47, 37 and 43, with Martin top scoring with 31 runs (which included two 7's!) Our bowling did the job solidly and we limited them to a mere 75 runs, thus breaking their tails off completely! Contributor of the Match was Martin Sage with a hefty net total of 28 runs! On 04-07-2006, The Explosive Nukes faced Trenstar. We batted first and mustered a solid 90 runs, a score we felt was defendable. The game was fairly even until the third skin when one of their batsman went ballistic and scored 38 runs! That really took the game away from us as they ended up on 119 runs. Contributor of the Match was Charl Haasbroek with a net contribution of 9 runs. Well done to Johan Visagie who got his second hat trick! Later, The Atomic Nukes played against Super Stars. They batted first and powered their way to a huge total of 125 runs. We chased for all our worth, but could only manage to win a single skin as we ended up on 78 runs. We have stopped counting the games we have now lost in a row, it is depressing man! We have a chance to redeem ourselves against them next week though, so watch this space! Contributor of the Match is shared between Konrad and Michael with a net total of 1 run. Our new WarCry(TM) made the loss somewhat (albeit a little bit!) better. Welcome to: Tip of the Week: When you are fielding, focus on the batsman's bat as you wait for him to hit the ball. His bat is the origin of the ball coming towards you. Focusing on his bat will give you the most time to pick up the path of the ball, which is very important for you having to catch it or keep it off the side net! |
22 June 2006: |
On 20-06-2006, The Atomic Nukes palyed Swing Ding. The Swingers swung the willow first and steadily powered their way to 127 runs. (We bowled quite accurately for a change, conceeding only 8 extras) We knew we were up against it though, but we tried our best to get that score. We failed however to put any pressure on their bowling and fielding and had to settle for 63 runs, meaning defeat by some 64 runs. Times are tough, but we keep a small light shining for that elusive victory! Contributor of the Match was Philip le Roux with 7 net runs. The Explosive Nukes squared up against The Vodashop Reds. The Reds (Aussie connection?) batted first and the ball about in all but the last skin to reach a massive 145 runs. We fell behind in the first two skins and could only recover to 100 runs in the end. The 24 extras conceeded by our bowling did not do our cause any justice! Contributor of the Match was Charl Haasbroek with 14 net runs. Welcome to: Tip of the Week: Bowl into the batsman's body to limit his scoring options! Do not allow him to free his arms to have a go at the back net where the BIG runs can be found! |
19 June 2006: |
On 13-06-2006, The Explosive Nukes played against Centurion Autobody. We batted first and got to 110 runs, which we felt were quite defendable. Piet top scored with a superb 30 runs. They came out firing and scored a massive 56 runs in the first skin, which immendiately piled the pressure on us. We were unable to stem the tide as runs flowed regularly. They eventually ended up on a well deserved 166 runs. Contributor of the Match was Johan Visagie with 12 net runs. We conceded 36 extras, which is just way too much. The Atomic Nukes played the first of their two games against old foe Vas Vat. They batted first and scored a healthy 36 followed by a staggering 48 in the second skin. We fought back in the third to concede only 14 runs, but had to succumb as they scored 31 more in the final skin, leaving us to chase 127, a formidaable total indeed! We tried hard to open with a big skin, but could only mange 25. From there things deteriorated as we scored 8 and 17 in the next two skins. The final skin did their best and added 26 to the total. We were however 51 runs short on 76. Contributor of the Match was Steve Aaron with 17 net runs. Directly afterwards, The Atomic Nukes faced Old Timers. Desparate for a win, we batted first and stacked up a solid 117 runs in our innings. They kept pace with our innings throughout and there was only 4 runs difference through halfway. They only past our score in the very last over and really nailed the coffin shut with a couple of sixes off the last two balls. This was our 13th straighth loss and it is long past painful. Better luck next time, we hope! Contributor of the match was Michael Correia with 9 net runs. Congratulations to: Tip of the Week: Remember two basic things when playing: Try to score two runs off every ball and try not to lose a wicket. Just watch those runs pile up! |
14 June 2006: |
The Winter 2006 season has already begun and we have again had some mixed fortunes to date. On 30-05-2006 The Explosive Nukes played Grd 8 Eliminators. We batted first and got off to a good start courtesy of Frank P and Ryan who scored 37. Nicholas and Turbo followed it up with a steady 25, which Steve Martin (get it?) matched in the third skin. Piet and Charl faced some tight bowling but managed to scramble 18 off the last over to add a valuable 24 runs to the score. The Eliminators thus had 111 to chase. We held them firm in the first skin, conceding only 11 runs. They however broke the strangle hold and smashed 40 runs in the second. We pulled back in the thrid to concede only 13 in the third though, which left them 47 runs short. Their last skin obviously went for it and we manged to just limit them to 42, giving a superb victory to us! Contributor of the match was Piet Viljoen with 18 net runs. A week later, on 06-06-2006, The Atomic Nukes started off their campaign against old foe MOB. They batted first and got off to a flyer, scoring 43 runs in the first skin. We dug deep and kept the second skin under control, conceding only 13 runs. They came back with 35 in the third skin, their score up to 91 and alarm bells going off again! They could only muster 20 runs in the final skin, which meant we had to chase 111! We started off solidly with 37 in the first skin, followed by 27 more in the second. The Mobsters however applied even more pressure in the third, us scoring only 17. Our final skin could only manage 24 more, which left us 12 runs adrift on 99. Contributor of the match was Erik vd Linde with 16 net runs. Congratulations to:
Tip of the Week: Be patient when fielding the ball. Make sure you gather the ball safely first, then attempt the run out. You can't throw a ball if its not under control! |
